Description
Rack servers are the standard building block of a server room: flat 1U or 2U boxes that slide into a rack. One or two good ones running virtual machines can replace five old servers.
What you get
- 1U and 2U servers with room for drives
- Memory and storage sized for your workload
- Redundant power supplies on request
- Remote management card for out-of-hours fixes
- Operating system or hypervisor installed and tested
Worth knowing
Spend on memory and disks before the processor, since most small business servers are limited by those. Choose redundant power supplies if the server matters, and put it on an online UPS, because a sudden power loss is the commonest way to damage one.
See virtualization, storage and backup for what usually runs on them.
